A Million Dollars For Your Block Party
Last month, Council President Shirley Purcival proposed a resolution that requires that any resident who wants to close the street for a block party will be required to have $1 million in insurance. According to her, this is a common requirement in Delaware county. This is not true. Please check for yourself. We have.
Block parties are one of the things I love about Parkside. Residents have been holding them for years and they are a wonderful way to get to know our neighbors and build our community. I can't understand why the Council President would make it more difficult to hold block parties. I also don't understand why council members Nick Capobianco, Vice President Doug Bull and Eric Long voted to pass this resolution.
Our fairy walk event explains how this all started in the comments.
The council meetings discussion and the vote.
It concerns me that council voted on a resolution that the residents never got a chance to express their thoughts on before the vote.
The comment portion where residents are permitted to discuss items on the agenda was before the residents had been made aware of the resolution.
The good news is that a resolution is as easy to revoke as it is to pass. All you have to do is vote out the people who want to make it more difficult to have a block party here than in any other borough on the county. We can make this ridiculous resolution a short blip in the history of Parkside.
Update…
In response to this post, Council President Shirley Purcival made a personal response using the official Parkside Borough Facebook page.
Here is what fellow Councilman Scott Sidlow had to say about Shirley’s response…
Now lets circle back to Shirley’s statement. She goes on about facts versus fiction, what fictions am I stating here? I am clearly stating that a $1 million waiver for a block party is unfavorable.
Fact: No advance notice was given to the residents about this change.
Lets have a closer look at this quote from Shirley…
I did not review other local government requirements?
Are you sure? Okay lets have a look…
City of Chester - Nothing about insurance
Brookhaven - Nothing about insurance
Media - Nothing about insurance
Morton - Nothing about insurance
Maybe I’m the one who can go on and on here.
So was that fiction by President Purcival, or a poorly guided judgmental assumption in a public statement?
Here is a statement release from Council candidate Kyle Riedy on this matter…
I think it’s about time for a change in Parkside leadership to individuals who believe in transparency & community. This November 2nd will be an important day for Parkside’s future.
